Things you must know when choosing a toilet suite.

Before you go out looking for your new toilet suite there are a couple of very important things you will need to know.

This will determine the type of toilet you can use and will be the first things you will be asked by the sales consultant.

1) TRAP TYPE:
  • The Trap type refers to the direction the waste from the toilet connects to the sewer pipe.
  • S TRAP – The waste pipe goes through the floor
  • P TRAP – The waste pipe goes through the wall
  • SKEW TRAP – The waste pipe goes through the wall to the side of the pan.

2) SET OUT MEASUREMENT:
  • The Set Out measurement refers to the position in the floor/ wall of the waste pipe.
  • S TRAP – The measurement from the wall to the centre of the pipe in the floor. This measurement can vary greatly, depending on the age of your home. They can vary anywhere from 80mm up to 270mm or more.
  • P TRAP – The measurement from the floor to the centre of the pipe in the wall. This measurement will generally be around 180mm
  • SKEW TRAP – The measurement from the floor to the centre of the pipe in the wall, PLUS, the measurement from the wall to the centre of the pipe.

3) WATER INLET POSITION:
  • The water inlet position refers to where the water supply enters the toilet to fill the cistern.
  • BOTTOM INLET – The water supply connects to the bottom of the cistern. The cistern tap will be located to the side of the pan near the floor. You must be aware of which side of the toilet the cistern tap is located, either the left or right hand side, particularly if you a wanting a wall faced toilet suite.
  • BACK INLET – The water supply connects to the back of the cistern. The cistern tap will be concealed inside the cistern, generally to the top left hand corner. You must not allow the plumbing to be set up for this type of toilet until you know the exact suite you are going to use.The inlet position will be different for each suite, depending on the height of the cistern.

4) PAN PROJECTION:
  • The pan projection refers to the distance from the wall to the front of the pan.
  • Depending on the available space you have, especially for allowing doors to open, you may need a toilet suite with a short projection.
  • All toilet suites will vary in their projection, so make sure you know what the maximum you can have before choosing the toilet.

5) WELS RATING.

  • All toilet suites sold in Australia must have a WELS Rating. This relates to the amount of water released in a full flush.
  • There are 2 main WELS Ratings, 3 Star (6lt Full Flush/ 3 Lt Half Flush) and 4 Star (4.5lt Full Flush/ 3Lt Half Flush)
  • All NEW homes and certain major renovations will require the installation off a 4 Star Rated toilet suite.
